A Second
“Putting Away” Study
There Are Only Two
Classes of People
Who May Lawfully Remarry “Another” |
1) Those
who have lawfully put away their mate:
Matthew 19:9,
“And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his
wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another,
committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is
put away doth commit adultery.”
2) Those whose mate has died:
Romans 7:3,
“So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she
shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead,
she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress,
though she be married to another man.”
The put away person falls into
neither of these categories:
-
The woman’s “husband” has not died.
-
The woman did not divorce her
husband for fornication (instead, he divorced her).
Matthew 19:3-9,
“The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him,
Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made
them at the beginning made them male and female, 5 And said, For this
cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife:
and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more
twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man
put asunder. 7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command
to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? 8 He
saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you
to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say
unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for
fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and
whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery”
(emp. jhb).
Is Putting Away anything
more than Sundering the Marriage (Note: Matthew 19:3, 6, 9)?
Cp. w. I Corinthians 7:10-11,
“And unto the married
I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife
depart from her
husband: 11 But and if she
depart, let her remain
unmarried or
be reconciled to her
husband: and let not the husband
put away his wife” (emp.
jhb). |
Matthew 5:32
Part A:
“shall put away” (apoluo)
Part B: “is divorced” (apoluo)
Matthew 19:9
Part A:
“shall put away” (apoluo)
Part B: “is put away” (apoluo)
Luke 16:18
Part A:
“putteth away” (apoluo)
Part B: “is put away” (apoluo)
It is self-evident that when someone
is sent away (et al definitions of
apoluo), they cannot send away the
person whom they were sent from, unless a reconciliation has occurred
first. |
Obviously, the definition of apoluo does
not encompass God’s binding law (obligation) that He initiates at the
time a couple is lawfully united in marriage.
For both those who put away and
those who are put away, the only
revealed possibilities after an unscriptural divorce
are:
1)
Adultery (Matthew 19:9; Mark 10:11-12; Luke 16:18).
2)
Remaining Unmarried (Matthew 19:12; I Corinthians 7:11).
3) Reconciliation
(I Corinthians 7:11).
4)
Remarriage to Another After One’s Bound Partner Dies (Romans
7:2-3; I Corinthians 7:39).
|
Matthew 19:9,
“And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for
fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso
marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.”
Part A
Whosoever
Puts Away
–
(for fornication)
–
Remarries Another
– No Adultery
Puts Away
–
(not for fornication)
– Remarries Another
– Commits
Adultery
Part B
Whoso
Is Put Away
– Remarries –
Commits Adultery
[Includes both categories of put away
people described in the first half of this verse] |
Those Who May
Marry |
1) Those who have never been lawfully
married (I Corinthians 7:2; Hebrews 13:4).
2) Those whose lawful partners have died
(Romans 7:2-3; I Corinthians 7:39).
3) Those who have put away their lawful
mate for fornication (Matthew 5:32a; 19:9a).
4) Those who may reconcile with their
bound mate after an unlawful divorce (I Corinthians
7:10-11). |
Those Who May
Not Marry |
1) Those who are already married and bound
(I Corinthians 7:2; Hebrews 13:4).
2) Those who have unlawfully put
away their mate (Matthew 19:9a; Mark 10:11-12; Luke 16:18a).
3) Those who have been put away by
their lawful mate for fornication (Matthew 5:32b; 19:9b).
4) Those who have been put away by
their lawful mate for any other cause (Matthew 5:32b; 19:9b;
Luke 16:18b). |
Those who are authorized to put away and remarry
another in Matthew 19:9a are obviously not those in Matthew
19:9b who commit adultery whenever they remarry another!
WHAT
THE BIBLE SAYS vs. WHAT MAN SAYS
ABOUT UNLAWFUL
DIVORCES & THOSE INVOLVED IN THEM |
The Bible Says: |
Man Says: |
“Let not” man put asunder Mt.
19:6 |
Man
CANNOT put asunder! |
When a man
puts away his wife, she “is divorced” / “put away”
Mt. 5:32; 19:9 |
She is
NOT divorced / put away! |
When a
wife unlawfully divorces her husband
she is “UNmarried” I Cor. 7:11 |
She is
STILL married! |
Upon
remarriage, the put away “doth
commit adultery” Mt. 19:9b |
In some
cases,
she doth NOT commit adultery! |
Adultery
results when the subject of
divorce (APOLUO) in Mt. 5:32a; 19:9a
and Lk. 16:18a remarries another. |
Adultery
does NOT necessarily result
when subject of divorce in Mt. 5:32a; 19:9a
and
Lk. 16:18a remarries another. |
The
unlawfully divorced are to
remain “unmarried or be
reconciled.”
I Cor. 7:11 |
It is
NOT necessary to “remain unmarried”
IF the one who perpetrated the divorce later commits
fornication. (Then, the one who remained chaste may employ a subsequent
“biblical putting away,” thereby ensuring their right to a “scriptural”
remarriage.) |
No authorized
remarriage to “another,”
based upon the state of being PUT AWAY (APOLUO).
Mt. 5:32b;
19:9b; Lk. 16:18b |
Future
remarriage to “another,” is possible based
upon the continuing state of being bound (DEO)
after the divorce (APOLUO) |
When a man
unscripturally puts away
his wife, he causes her to commit
adultery upon her subsequent
remarriage to another. Mt. 5:32 |
If, after
unlawfully divorcing his wife,
a man remarries/commits fornication, and
she then employs a post-divorce “biblical”
putting away, he does not
cause her to
commit adultery when she remarries another. |
DIVORCE &
REMARRIAGE |
One Who Puts Away |
One Who Is Put Away |
Matthew 5:32 |
“But I say
unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the
cause of fornication, causeth her to commit
adultery: |
and whosoever
shall marry her that is divorced committeth
adultery.” |
Matthew 19:9 |
“And I say
unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for
fornication, and shall marry another, committeth
adultery: |
and whoso
marrieth her which is put away doth commit
adultery.” |
Mark 10:11-12 |
“And he saith unto them, Whosoever
shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth
adultery against her.
And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to
another, she committeth
adultery.” |
|
Luke 16:18 |
“Whosoever putteth away his wife,
and marrieth another, committeth
adultery: |
and whosoever
marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth
adultery.” |
THE RULE & THE EXCEPTION
Whosoever puts away and marries
another commits adultery. This is true in every case except one:
When the putting away is for fornication! |
THE RULE WITHOUT EXCEPTION
Whosoever marries one who is put away
commits adultery. There is no exception mentioned! |

I Peter 4:11
“If any man speak, let him
speak as the oracles of God”
Cp. w. Romans 10:17,
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”
Cp. w. Galatians 1:8-10,
“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you
than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we
said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto
you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. 10 For do I now
persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I
should not be the servant of Christ.”
Cp. w. II John 9,
“Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of
Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath
both the Father and the Son.”
